Coaching is flexible to the individual and is usually delivered by phone. It can include the family or be directed solely at parents, or it can be directly for the person with Asperger’s.

The assumptions are that the subject can develop new skills and ways of living, and that coaching will help by allowing the subject to become comfortable with themselves, develop a new level of confidence and then be able to learn new ways of doing things, and the aim is a comfortable level of autonomy and independence.

It is possible for the coach to take a variety of roles (counsellor, mentor, teacher, friend etc) in order to support the person in moving forward and it addresses the whole person in their lives, aiming for a life of high satisfaction and low stress within a support network that understands and accepts the person.

Coaching usually takes an hour and a half each week in one conversation, but this time will vary considerably according to the individual’s needs and abilities. A coaching agreement usually lasts a number of months.
