5. Educational opportunities PDF Print E-mail

Educational opportunities include the mainstream choices (school, university, college) as well as private tutors. Some children will do better in special schools though specialist schools for Asperger’s Syndrome are in short supply and tend to be expensive.

Local Education authorities in the UK will pay for children to have their special needs met, though accessing this can be a long process. Mainstream schools are able to employ special support to ensure the child is accessing the curriculum. The law says that each child is entitled to an education appropriate to their needs and that the curriculum must be delivered in a way that suits their needs.

Parents may well benefit from coaching to guide them though the process of getting an appropriate education for the child. College and university are often within the grasp of a person with Asperger’s, though their confidence may be low if they were bullied. The loose structure of university can be a difficult and hence stressful, as can the social scene. Adult education is good for people with Asperger’s as the pre condition is that each student chooses to attend and hence the social scene is quieter.
