Psychologists may be Chartered Clinical Psychologists (the gold standard) or occupational, educational, or forensic (concerned with crime). They may offer assessment and diagnosis (though psychiatric diagnosis is usually stronger). From this they may offer a course of consultation. This may be therapeutic, or designed to help develop a treatment strategy. Psychology begins with a study of how the brain operates, and can very loosely be divided into Behavioural/cognitive or Humanistic.

Behavioural/cognitive looks at cause and effect and can offer uniquely useful strategies to adapt behaviour. Humanistic looks at the interrelation of all parts of the person, and can help a person develop a stronger sense of themselves. This matters more if you are considering entering into a long course of treatment (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy – CBT – has the best track record and Freudian analysis probably the worst), but matters less if you are seeking assessment and strategy development.
