Is coaching for you? PDF Print E-mail

This section of the website is intended to lay out the pros and cons of the available choices and to help you to decide what is best in your particular case. There are very few well accepted ways of helping someone with Asperger’s move forward. Coaching is designed very specifically around the needs of families living with Asperger’s, and in many ways it compares well against the other choices. However, it is not the only choice, neither is it always the correct one.

Bill GoodyearI have given very brief overviews - there is more information elsewhere (on the National Autistic Society website for instance), and I hope they help you to clarify what you feel most comfortable with.

The first question is this - are you willing to accept help in developing ways for the person with Asperger’s to manage his life more completely?

Then ask yourself what you hope this help will achieve. Is it about learning a skill or developing a new habit or perhaps managing a commitment or developing a fully independent way of life?

Much of what I have said is universal, but there will be differences in how the specific boundaries are drawn in different countries: for instance in France Asperger’s is seen as a psychiatric problem, whereas in the USA and the UK it is seen as a developmental condition. There is no consensus on what approach is right for this condition - each individual has to find a solution that suits them and their circumstances.

First I describe diagnosis and the various types of help and support that are available. In the section called ’Ages and Stages’ I go into how the problems faced by the person with Asperger’s depend on their age: have a look at the age you are currently experiencing and then the next stage to see what might be coming.

If at the end you decide that you would like to enrol for coaching with me, please send me an email or give me a call so we can have a chat about your individual situation.See the Contact me page for my contact details.
