Purpose of registration

Registration is intended (a) to allow users of this website to communicate with each other in a safe environment and (b) to provide a simple way to leave their email address and to manage their newsletter subscriptions.

When you register and log in several new pages become visible to you:

·         Your own profile page, which contains your newsletter subscriptions and privacy settings

·         The discussion forum

·         The browse users page, which allows you to find other people who have registered so that you can contact them directly

·         The email page, which you use for sending and replying to private email within the website.

Newsletter subscriptions

Once you have registered, to select the newsletters you would like to receive, log in, click on Update profile and then on the Newsletters tab.

Names and usernames

Your username is the main way in which you will be identified on the site, in emails, on the discussion forum and, if you choose, in the registered user list. If your subscription has been transferred from Bill’s previous site you will find that you have been assigned a username at random. I have used a list of words, mostly people’s names, from Bulfinch's Age of Fable: Legends of King Arthur, plus two random digits. Why the Arthurian legends? We’ve got to start somewhere and these are as amusing and innocuous as anything I could find. This is only intended to be a temporary solution so when changing your username and name don't feel you have to stick to the knights-and-wizards flavour.

The names and numbers have been assigned completely at random so if you have ended up with “Cursed13” rather than “Charming07” please don’t expend a lot of effort reading deep meaning into it (and blaming me) just change it! You may choose any name you like as long as it is at least 3 characters long and doesn’t contain spaces. Also, please don’t choose a username that might cause offence. If you do I will probably ask you to change it.

We do not insist that the “Name” you give on the registration form is your real name and if your subscription was transferred from the previous site, to protect privacy this have been set to the same as your username. Your “Name” will be visible to anyone who can see you profile page (i.e. any registered user) and if you would really prefer to remain anonymous, just make one up. However, we encourage you to give your real name as your “Name” if remaining anonymous is not important to you, because a community in which people use their real names encourages trust and openness.

Privacy

We recognise that some people register only so that they can receive the newsletters and don't wish to communicate with other users. The privacy of these people is important to us.

If you do not wish to communicate with other people who have registered on the site but would like to register so that you can receive the newsletters by email, we suggest that:

1.       You leave the “Include me in user list” box on the registration form unticked

2.       You do not send email messages to other users

3.       You do not make posts on the discussion forum (although you are free to read other people’s posts).

Visibility: Include me in user list option

By default, users of this site have 'ex-directory' accounts in which their usernames are not listed in the User directory. You have to choose to have your username listed. We suggest that unless you particularly do not want other people to contact you, it is a good idea to include yourself in the directory, as having more people in the directory will make for a much more active and more useful community.

If you tick the Include me in user list box on the registration form your username will appear in the list and in searches on the User directory page. This makes it much easier for people to send you messages and contact requests. Also, if you tick this box the text you write in the “About me” box will appear on the User directory page. This is the place to write a brief explanation of who you are and the kind of people you would like to communicate with.

Keeping your contact details private

The email address and telephone number that you supplied in the registration form are only visible to the administrators of the site. We recommend that you do not make these public in the discussion forum and that you only do so in private emails when you know the person with whom you are communicating.

If you wish to meet someone from the site, please take sensible precautions. For example, if possible do not go alone and if you do go alone, then let a friend or relation know where you are going and when you will be back. We cannot be held responsible for any loss to property or injury to your person as a result of meetings with people who you have contacted through this site.

Unsubscribing

To unsubscribe from one or more of the email newsletters, go to the Update my profile page, click on the Newsletters tab and untick the appropriate box(es).

To remove your membership details from the site completely and to delete your profile page please send an internal email message to the administrator. Full instructions on how to do this can be found here. (Page opens in a new window.)
