I qualified as a teacher in 1979, after a few years of working with children in other situations.

The first teaching job I ever held was as a teacher of autistic children, which I took on in about 1981, working for the National Autistic Society only 16 years after the first ever school for autistic children had been opened. I became Principal of the school some time later, then moved into adult provision – a total mystery for teachers at that time, thence to management consultant – a total mystery for all of us to this day.

I qualified in neuro linguistic programming, added training to my list of competencies and began the adventure of developing a business coaching adults with Asperger’s Syndrome. I began in total frustration about 17 years ago. I was an advocate for a man with Asperger’s for five years: eventually everybody agreed it would be better for me to try to provide something than to continue to argue for non existent provision.

So I started a business uniquely offering coaching to people with Asperger’s syndrome, which I have been doing for 17 years, sometimes employing others to support me, which is also instructive.

Nowadays I am looking particularly at the impact people can have on each other and using that influence to explore what can be created by individuals working together.

We help people with Asperger’s Syndrome find balance on the sharp knife-edge between creating an independent life and a dependent one: small effects can tip you over one side or the other.

Over the last 20 years I have seen many families as they grow up together, trying to understand and support the person with Asperger’s, holding all the usual hopes, bearing more than the usual disappointments and confusion, taking responsibility. In my work I am looking for the way to tip people over into independence and autonomy rather than the usual problems of anxiety, dependence and powerlessness.

  • Building and maintaining relationships
  • Feelings of anger, depression and anxiety
  • Changing habits such as compulsive behaviour, diet, sleep and activity.

Is coaching for you? PDF Print E-mail

This section of the website is intended to lay out the pros and cons of the available choices and to help you to decide what is best in your particular case. There are very few well accepted ways of helping someone with Asperger’s move forward. Coaching is designed very specifically around the needs of families living with Asperger’s, and in many ways it compares well against the other choices. However, it is not the only choice, neither is it always the correct one.
